Black History Month Celebration Through Film Series is a free series of film screening of independent Black films. The Bay Area Community is invited to this free event
.
Oakland Vice Mayor Desley Brooks, Rocky Seker, and
Black Cinema At-Large are holding Black Independent Film screenings at City Hall in Council
Chambers every Friday in February in celebration of Black History Month.
These are films that haven’t been distributed nationally and are
normally only accessible on the Black Film Festival Circuit. A reception
will be held before each screening, and there will be an engaging
Q&A with either the producers or directors at each film screening to
encourage an exchange from the audience.
Every Friday in February — February 3rd, February 10th, February 17th, and February 24th from 6 PM to 10 PM.
Films are:
February 3: “Make A Movie Like Spike” (soon to be “The American Dream”)
February 10: “The Interrupters” and “White Scripts And Black Supermen” (formerly entitled “Shaft Vs. Sidney Poitier”)
February 17: “Soul rain: The Hippest Trip in America"
February 24: “Redemption Road” (formerly entitled “White, Black & Blues”).
Everyone and anyone in the community with an interest in fine film. Admission is free.

Building a Grad Nation Summit takes place March 18-21, 2012 in Washington, D.C. The Building a Grad Nation Summit is the premier event of Grad
Nation, our 10-year campaign to end the high school dropout crisis and
prepare young people for college and the 21st century workforce.
The Grad Nation campaign has two specific goals:
- To increase the national graduation rate to 90 percent by 2020 with no school graduating less than 80 percent
- To regain America’s standing as first in the world in college completion
Addressing these critical issues requires all sectors of our communities
working together in new, more coordinated ways. And that’s exactly what
this annual gathering helps bring about. The summit brings together
community organizations, educators, local and state leaders, national
nonprofit organizations, businesses, youth and others to not only share
progress but also catalyze additional action. To register, click here.
